HISTORY OF MILLS CO, IA, 1895: "Nancy remained in Ohio."
INFO FROM MELISSA HILLSTROM: Samuel and Nancy are not showing on the Iowa State 1895 Census. I know that Nancy died in 1892 so that makes sense but I don't know where Samuel or Thomas are. They are probably listed under some grossly misspelled variation of the name. In 1898, Samuel dies and both he and Nancy are buried in Hewitt-South Cemetery, Red Oak, Iowa. Also listed on the headstone are Jeffie, Dolly (Ella?), Geneva and Blanche. Jeffie may have been Samuel, Jr.? Dolly may have been Ella who died at age 2 months. Thomas, also called 'Roe' or 'Law', was only a year old when his mother died and only 7 when his father died. He went and lived with and was raised by, his big sister, Deborah, and her husband. (Census of 1900.) I suspect he went to live with Deborah just after Nancy died. (Note: It appears that Montgomery Co. was not included in the 1895 IA State Census.) Note: Nancy Shamblen was mainly raised by Wickham's. Her mother died when she was about 6. Following her father's remarriage, she and her little brother, George, went to live with Julia & Jacob Douglas. (Julia was Aseneth's sister). Nancy's brother, Thomas, went to live with his grandparents, Nathan Henry and Jemima Wickham. Julia and Jacob lived next door to, or just down the road from, Nathan and Jemima.
MONTGOMERY CO, IA, WPA: Nancy Forshey 1856-1892 - South Cem., Grant Twp. (The 1856 birth year must be wrong. Otherwise, Nancy could not have been listed as 1 in the 1850 Census.)
FIND A GRAVE - Hewitt Cem, Red Oak, Montgomery Co, IA Samuel Forshey 1850-1898 Nancy his wife 1856-1892 Jeffie Dollie Geneva Blanche (Note: It appears that Samuel's birth year may be incorrect, since he is listed as age 4 in the 1850 Census. It also appears that Nancy's birth year is incorrect.)
Nancy married Samuel FORSHEY on 25 Jan 1870 in Noble Co, OH.1 (Samuel FORSHEY was born in 1846 in Dexter, Monroe Co, OH,6 7 died in 1898 in Red Oak, Montgomery Co, IA 4 and was buried in Hewitt Cem, Red Oak, Montgomery Co, IA 5.)
