Regimental History
Tenth Infantry MISSOURI (3-YEARS)

Tenth Infantry. -- Cols., George R. Todd. Samuel A. Holmes, F. C. Deimling, Lieut.-Cols., S. A. Holmes, John D. Foster, Leonidas Homey, Christian Hoppel; Majs., Aaron Brown, Leonidas Homey, F. C. Deimling, Joseph Walker.

The regiment rendezvoused at the St. Louis arsenal on Aug. 1, 1861, under command of Col. Chester Harding. While completing the organization it was employed in guarding the southwest branch of the Pacific railroad from the attacks of guerrillas.

On Nov. 19, 1861, three companies of the 21st regiment, also in process of formation, was consolidated with the 10th, which was then mustered into service with 869 officers and men. In Dec., 1861, the regiment was engaged in the pursuit of the Confederate force engaged in destroying the North Missouri railroad, following them through Warren, Callaway, Boone and Audrain counties.

It was then stationed at Warrenton and High Hill until April, 1862, when its strength was further augmented by the addition of part of Foster's battalion and ordered to report to Gen. Halleck at Pittsburg landing, Tenn. As a part of the 3rd
division, Army of the Mississippi, under Gen. Hamilton, it took part in the siege of Corinth and the battle of Farmington, Miss.; was then in several minor engagements during the summer.

It was present at the battles of Iuka and Corinth; with Grant's expedition into central Mississippi, then moved to Memphis, Tenn., and during the winter was stationed at Germantown, Tenn., on the Memphis & Charleston railroad. In the spring of 1863 the division was made the 7th division, 17 corps, and under Gen. McPherson was engaged in all the principal actions in which that corps participated in the Vicksburg campaign.

After the reduction of Vicksburg it joined the army at Chattanooga, Tenn., and fought with its customary valor at Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. Early in 1864 it was sent into Alabama to guard the Memphis & Charleston railroad, and there engaged in several skirmishes with detachments of the enemy.

In June it was contentrated at Huntsville, Ala., transported to Kingston, GA, and in July was ordered to Resaca to hold the works covering the railroad bridge at that point and a construction camp a few miles north, meeting and defeating the enemy several times while on this service.

Owing to the method by which the regiment was organized, it was mustered out at different times, part in August and the last detachment in Oct. 1864.

1910 IA CENSUS, Mills Co, Glenwood city: "Fredrick Shamlin", father, 84, wd, b. OH, father b. VA, mother b. Germany, no occupation. He was living with his widowed daughter, Anna F. Rager, and her daughter Pauline.

HISTORY OF MILLS CO, IA, 1985: "Frederick Shamblen was born in Noble Co, OH. He brought his family westward and lived in Hancock Co, IL, and Henry Co, IA , before moving to Mills Co. He served with the Union Forces during the Civil War. His last years were lived in a small house just in back of the stores on the south side of the square in Glenwood. He died at the advanced age of 89 years and 23 days. He lies under a Civil War marker in the Glenwood cemetery.
Frederick Shamblen and his second wife, Susanna Bates, migrated to Glenwood about 1871. Frederick apparently worked at day labor before his health began to fail in later years.
Frederick had 13 children by his two wives. The descendants of this man number over 400 people, many of whom are still living in or around the Mills Co. area."

OBIT: THe Malvern Leader, September 2, 1915:
Frederick Shamblin, an aged resident of Glenwood and an invalid for some months past suffered a stroke of apoplexy Saturday night, August 27, and never regained consciousness, passing away Monday afternoon shortly after three o'clock.
Frederick Shamblin was born in Noble County, Ohio, August 7, 1826, and died at Glenwood, August 30, 1915, aged 89 years and 23 days. In early life he moved to Illinois, and at the outbreak of the civil war joined an Illinois regiment and served through the entire war.
Mr. Shamblin was twice married, and both wives preceded him in death. His second wife died in Glenwood 11 years ago. Mr. Shamblin with his family (after the war) moved from Illinois to Rock Bluffs, Neb., and came to Mills County in 1871, moving to a farm near Glenwood. He has lived in town the past 30 years. The past 5 years he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. A. F. Rager, who has carefully looked after him.
Of the four children of the first marriage two are still alive - Thomas Samblin of Imogene and Mrs. Eliza Askern of Glenwood. Of the eight children born of the second marriage four still survive. They are Mrs. J. H. Johnson and Mrs. A. F. Rager of Glenwood, Mrs. Mary Vanderford of Omaha, and Mrs. Jesse Dowell of Osakis, Minn. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 1, conducted by Rev. John Ness of Tabor.

Wayne "is descended from Benjamin Wickham's son Nathan. Nathan's daughter Cena married Frederick Shamblin about 1847 in Monroe County, Ohio. Frederick Shamblen after remarriage upon Cena's death left Ohio, lived in Hancock County, Illinois, Henry Co, Iowa and died in 1915 in Mills County, Iowa." - - -
After many years of trying to locate Thomas Shamblin's (Cena Wickham's son) whereabouts throughout his life we finally found most of Cena's children were raised by the Wickhams, Cena's brothers and sisters, in Ohio and not by their father and his second wife. Some of them in later years did go to where he lived." - - -
"Wayne is great, great grandson of Cena Wickham born about 1826, died 1856."

Frederick married Aseneth "Sena" WICKHAM, daughter of Nathan Henry WICKHAM and Jemima BASS, about 1844 in Monroe Co, OH.¹ (Aseneth "Sena" WICKHAM was born on 13 Feb 1827 in Monroe Co, OH ⁴ and died in 1855 in Caldwell, Noble Co, OH ⁵.)

Frederick next married Susanna BATES about 1855 in OH.² (Susanna BATES was born on 2 Feb 1829 in OH,⁶ died on 5 Dec 1904 in Glenwood, Mills Co, IA ⁶ and was buried on 6 Dec 1904 in Glenwood Cem, Mills Co, IA ⁷.)
