Descendants of John Wickham 1734-1835

John Wickham was born in Rhode Island in June of 1734 to unknown parents. When 8 years old, John moved to New York and later served in the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. About 1818, John, and many of his descendants, moved to southeast Ohio. At the age of 99 years he applied for a military pension and was awarded $80 a year. When almost 100, John married his second wife, Sarah Cunningham, who was in her 80's. At the time of this marriage, he was said to have the appearence of a man in his 60's. He died Feb. 19, 1835 in Morgan Co, OH at the age of 100 years and 8 months.

Warren Wickham (~1761 -~1820) served in the Revolutionary War and later moved to southeast OH. Many of his descendants moved to WV. (presumed son of John Wickham)
Daniel Wickham (1762 - 1844) served in the Revolutionary War and lived his entire life in NY, as did most of his descendants. (presumed son of John Wickham)
Mary Wickham (1765 - ~1845) married Ephraim Farrington and lived in NY, as did most of her descendants.

Benjamin Wickham (1768 -1851) was referred to by John Wickham as my oldest son in his Revolutionary War pension application. Benjamin moved from NY to southeast OH. He had a large family and many of his descendants moved on to IA.
Margaret Wickham (1769 - Bef 1850) married Ambrose Merry and moved from NY to southeast OH. (presumed daughter of John Wickham)
Reuben Wickham (1769 - Aft 1840) remained in NY but many of his descendants moved to southeast OH and then on to IA. (presumed son of John Wickham)
Susanna Wickham (1772 - 1849) married Thomas Balis and moved from NY to southeast OH. (presumed daughter of John Wickham)
Sir William Johnson Wickham (1776 - Aft 1834) served as a drummer in the War of 1812. He may have been named after a commander John Wickham probably knew from the French & Indian War, Sir William Johnson. In John Wickham's pension application, William referred to John as my father . William moved from NY to southeast OH and many of his children moved on to IA. Updated 2024
John Wickham, Jr. ( 1777 - ~1865) moved from NY to southeast OH and then on to IA. He reportedly had 21 children by two wives and 7 of his sons served in the Civil War. (presumed son of John Wickham)

An interest in sharing the research I had done over the course of many years motivated me to establish this web-site in 2007. Information on the last of John Wickham's children to be researched, Margaret, was completed in July 2019 - although genealogy is never really completed and I continue to work on updating! This site includes information on 7 generations of Wickhams, beginning with John Wickham, with over 14,100 names and 312 photos. You are encouraged to contribute information to this site. Any unique information or photos you are willing to share will be greatly appreciated and you will be credited with providing the information. I have attempted to exclude information on living persons and they are listed only as Living . Please let me know if you discover any errors on this site.
DNA testing indicates a strong connection between John Wickham and Immigrant Thomas Wickham! DNA results from a known descendant of John Wickham (1734-1835) and a known descendant of Immigrant Thomas Wickham (1622-1688) showed exact matches of 45 out of 46 DNA markers! The John Wickham descendant was the 4th generation after John and the Immigrant Thomas Wickham descendant was the 10th generation after Thomas. Test results suggests that the two Wickhams tested share a direct parental line of ancestry within fewer than 8 generations.
Who were the parents of John Wickham? There is much conflicting information about John's ancestry on the internet and none that I have seen show that his parents lived in Rhode Island, where John said he lived for 8 yrs. If you have any information on John's ancestry, I would love to hear from you!!

Much appreciation goes to the late Gerald Wickham of IA and the late Anne Wickham of OH, without whom this website would not exist. The 3 of us collaborated over the course of many years, researching the Wickhams and sorting out which lines the various Wickhams belonged to.
Thanks also to the late Arthur N. Wickham and his reseach files that are at the Nebraska State Historical Library at Lincoln, in the manuscript department. He attempted to compile family trees of all the Wickhams who lived in the US but died before completing this massive project. Included in his reseach files are many letters written in the 1940's from various Wickhams who submitted genealogy information.
