OBIT: Tuesday, September 4, 1951: FINAL RITES for IRWIN GREENLIEF ATTENDED BY MANY - An overflow crowd of friends and relatives attended final rites for Irwin W. Greenlief, held Saturday afternoon at the Guenther funeral home.
Mr. Greenlief, well-known in Fort Dodge business circles and active in civic affairs, died Thursday at Lutheran hospital following a lingering illness.
During the service the Rev. Leonard E. Deaver, pastor of the First Evangelical and United Brethren church, read a statement, written by Miss June Greenlief as a tribute to her father.
In part, the Rev. Deaver read, "This man was neither 'great' nor unnecessarily 'good'. He left no books, no songs, no legends. Neither a saint nor a martyr nor a hero, he was, like the great majority of us, absorbed in the economic struggle for existence, sometimes beaten by it, sometimes transcending it, sometimes circumventing it, in those robust sports in which he delighted: hunting, fishing, trapping. He enjoyed life, and he occupied a meaningful effective place in society. Meaning "The meaning that you may learn from his death is to live, as fully and completely as possible; to seize the day - as he did - and attempt to be happy in it. And - as he wanted to do - to hurt as few, and to help as many people as possible."
Six close friends, C. A. Sampson, Ewald G. Trost, R. J. Fisher, J. H. Fitzgerald and Elmer Kirchner, all of Fort Dodge and Joe G. Nelson of Cherokee were pallbearers.
Mrs. B. G. Marchi arranged the floral tributes.
A group of Boy Scouts from several troops in the city, under the direction of Mark Perkinson, scout executive of the Prairie Gold council, and John Myers, assistant, served as an honor guard at the funeral home.
Members of the Lions club, of which Mr. Greenlief had been a member, attended the services in a group. Other groups represented were the Fort Dodge Real Estate board, the Prairie Gold council of the Boy Scouts, the public school administration and the Izaak Walton League.
At Steamboat Rock - Burial was in the Steamboat Rock cemetery where Lyle Smith, Marcie Smith, Jack Smith, Melvin Perkins and Clarence Wickham, all cousins of Mr. Greenlief, and Robert Ruppelt, a close friend, served as pallbearers.
Coming from away for the services were Mr. and Mrs. Joe G. Nelson of Cherokee; Mrs. and Mrs. A. E. Goes, Mrs. Minnie Hamilton of Marshalltown; Mrs. Gretchen McCulloch of Los Angeles, Calif; Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Ainsworth, De Tour, Mich; Mr. and Mrs. Warren Harris, Sioux Falls, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Harry G. Eilers and son, Minneapolis, Minn; Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Baird, Waverly; Mrs. Fay Adey, Iowa City; Mr. and Mrs. Gene Laffler, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ver Steeg, and Mrs. F. W.
