OBIT: San Francisco Chronicle, Thursday., January 13, 2000: June Kessler - A memorial service will be conducted tomorrow for June Kessler, long time host of a weekly Bay Area radio show on aging and disability, who died January 6 at the age of 71.
For 20 years, Mrs. Kessler conducted the radio show "Fighting Back", which is broadcast on KUSF-FM every Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The show, which first was broadcast on KALW-FM, is the longest-running radio show of its kind in the United States.
Since 1988, Mrs. Kessler was co-host of the show with Maggie Dee, who will continue to conduct "Fighting Back" every Sunday.
Mrs. Kessler interviewed hundred of people for the program, including civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, State Sen. John Burton and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, who proclaimed June 7, 1998, "Fighting Back Day in San Francisco."
"Everyone imaginable has been on our program," said Mrs. Kessler's husband, Ralph, who produced the show. "The secret of our program was that June never asked questions about things she already knew. She wanted spontaneity."
Mrs. Kessler, who earned a master's degree in English literature from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, taught English at a junior college in Chicago before moving to San Francisco with her husband in 1977. She became more interested in disability issues in 1967, when she broke her hip in an accident and then suffered a cerebral stroke. Her hip never fully healed.
Ralph Kessler will appear on "Fighting Back" Febuary 6th to pay tribute to his wife, who is also survived by a brother, Joe Greenlief, of Randolph, Utah.
A memorial service for Mrs. Kessler is scheduled tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the dining room at Strawberry Creek Lodge, a senior housing facility at 1320 Addison St. in Berkeley where she lived.

She later returned to Chicago and was secy. and ghost writer for Kermit Eby, in the social science Dept of the U. of Chi. After his death she was secy & ghost writer for the head of the Weights & Measures Dept. of the City of Chi., and went around as Betty Budget, checking markets, etc. While working for Eby she and Eby co-authored a book PARADOXES OF DEMOCRACY - Haddam House, 1956. Then she taught English and English Lit at Wilson Jr. College, Chi., until she had her hip surgery. She and Ralph moved to SF following their marriage - get dates from her."
