ELEANOR AINSWORTH GREENLIEF BAIRD'S STORY OF HER LIFE, 1987: (excerpts)
"I was named after an aunt, my father's only sister, Lucretia Eleanor Ainsworth. Didn't like the name Lucretia, so dropped it when I entered school.
Eleanor Baird (Lucretia Eleanor Ainsworth Greenlief Baird) was born Aug. 9, 1908 at Decorah, Winneshiek County, Ia., the fifth of six children born to Porter Lester (Toke) Ainsworth and Amy Adel Dershan. The Ainsworth's and the McCools (Margaret Eliz.) were of English and Scotch descent. The Dershans were Pennsylvania Dutch."
"Your grandfather and I met when we were sophomores in High School." " After graduation I worked at the Mason City Brick & Tile Co., Mason City, Ia. for a year, then returned to Fort Dodge and worked for Those. M. Healy, an excellent attorney."
"Your grandfather and a friend, Kenneth Cooper, took a barnstorming trip to the west coast (after our secret marriage), sailed on a Standard Oil Tanker to Baltimore and then sailed on a cattle boat to England, where they jumped ship, bought bicycles and cycled through the lake country of Scotland, and then back to the States. We announced our marriage in May 1927, and went to school at Grinnell College."
"After a year at Grinnell, we returned to Fort Dodge, where Irwin was Sec'y of the Fort Dodge Credit Bureau." "We then went to Calif. and operated the Huntington Park Credit Bureau for two years (1936-1938). Sold it" - - " and returned to Fort Dodge and operated the Logan Hotel from then until your grandfather's death." (summarized: Eleanor reports they also bought the Butler & Rhodes Abstracting Co., an apartment building and built/sold 10 houses on lots they bought. After Irwin died, she sold all the business, and lived in several different places in the US and Canada. She later returned to West Union, IA.) "Next appeared Rodney Baird on the scene. I had known him for some 30-40 yrs. at the gathering place at the cemetery at Steamboat Rock. His wife, Neva, had died in 1960. We were married in 1963. I worked for the library in West Union, but it interfered with our fishing, so I stopped that foolishness (I mean, the library work), and concentrated on fishing, more or less. After Rodney's death in 1977, - - - " (Submitted by Marty Greenlief.)

FAYETTE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER: - IN LOVING MEMORY - Eleanor Ainsworth Baird, one of six children of Porter Lester and Amy Dershan Ainsworth, was born in Decorah, Aug. 9, 1908, and died Thursday, Nov. 1 (1990) at a hospital in Draper, Utah, near her son, Joe Greenlief.
At the request of the deceased, there was no funeral service. Her body was donated to a University in Utah for medical and scientific purposes. Mrs. Baird and her second husband, Rodney (Mike) Baird retired in West Union in 1960. Mrs. Baird's older sisters, Gretchen and Margaret lived with them.
Mrs. Baird, a skilled office worker, was a faithful volunteer at the Fayette county Historical Society/Genealogical society for many years. She was instrumental in typing the 1850-1925 census. This involved helping to read and copy the microfilm, then typing, organizing and filing some. Many genealogical researchers throughout the nation have profited from her many hours of volunteer work. The people associated with Eleanor miss her inimitable sense of humor.
She is survived by a daughter, June Greenlief Kessler; a son, Joe A. Greenlief; three grandchildren Amy, Martin, and Eric Greenlief; and a great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings and two husbands. (Submitted by Marty Greenlief.)
