Andrew Petersen Wins.
Andrew Petersen. one of the best known employees of the Western Union office and for many months Associated Press operator on The Gazette, last evening won the hot race for the financial secretaryship of Linden Camp No 145. Modern Woodmen, against a field of five competitors. The position was made vacant by the resignation of A.W. Kool. who is soon to leave the city.
Mr. Petersen is a splendid young man and he has been loyal and ardent in his duties as a Woodman, having been a member of the degree team and escort of the camp for some years. He will take the same office so long occupied by Mr. Kool, and will enter upon his new duties with enthusiasm. That he will make a careful, painstaking agreeable and successful secretary goes without saying.

ANDREW PETERSEN, 64, DIES; RITES MONDAY
Andrew Petersen
Petersen, 64, associated with Western Union in Cedar Rapids for almost 40 years, died at 11:55 a.m. Friday in a Cedar Rapds hospital after a long illness. His home was at 2447 Fifth avenue SE. Born to Danish parents July 6, 1886, in Germany, he emigrated to the United States in 1890. Mr. Petersen became associated with Western Union at Elgin, 1ll., in 1900, joining the Cedar Rapids office in 1905. After following other occupations from 1910 to 1916, he rejoined Western Union and was automatic chief operator and operations supervisor at the onset of his illness last year.
Mr. Petersen's first wife preceded him in death. Surviving are a son, Donald W. Petersen of Silvis, Ill.; a daughter, Mrs. Willis Hahn of Sioux City; his second wife, the former Clare Young Nichols; two sisters and six grandchildren. Mr. Petersen was a member and past official of many Masonic groups including Crescent lodge, No. 25, A.F. and A.M., El Kahir Shrine and Apollo Commandery. He also belonged to the First Congregational church, Linden Camp Modern Woodmen and Valley Camp Royal Neighbors.
Services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Turner chapel by the Rev. J. Richard Wagner and Crescent lodge with a Commandery escort. All Master Masons are asked to meet at the Masonic hall's Cresent lodge at 3 p.m. Monday to attend services. Friends may call at the chapel after 1 p.m. Saturday.

PETERSEN SERVICES
Services for Andrew Petersen, 2447 Fifth avenue SE, who died in a Cedar Rapids hospital Friday at 11:55 a.m., will be conducted in the Turner chapel at 3:30 p.m. Monday by the Rev. J. Richard Wagner, pastor of the First Congregational church, of which Mr. Petersen had been a deacon for many years. Crescent lodge, No. 25, A. F. and A. M., with an Apollo Conunandery escort, will assist. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Surviving, in addition to those listed in the obituary notice, are a son, Kevin Nichols, Cedar Rapids recreation supervisor, and two sisters, Mrs. Frank Hall of Bellingham, Minn., and Mrs. Mary Rasmussen of Elgin, IL.
All Master Masons are asked to meet with Crescent lodge at the Masonic hall at 3 p.m. Monday to attend the services.

1920's WRITTEN HISTORY FROM RUTH HALL RITTER (granddaughter of Hans Petersen & Christina Wind):
All my great-grandparents were engaged in dairying and "lived in the old country of Denmark in the province of Schlavig Holstein". - - - "Andreas Petersen (father of Hans) fought in the war between Germany and Denmark in 1864 in which Germany took Schlavig Holstein. There were six children born to Andreas and Maren Petersen, the oldest one being named Hans, who was born October 26, 1854.
Christina Wind worked in a home where a number of other maids worked also. While working here, Hans Petersen came to work at this home also. In a short time, Christina became the wife of Hans. These are my grandparents. They spoke the Danish language and lived up to the Danish customs, but in reality they were living in a part of Germany, as Schlavig Holstein now belonged to Germany, They had six children" including "Andrew, who is now manager of the Western Union Telegraph Company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa." - - - -
"My grandparents moved to Woodstock, Illinois in 1890, because the children were being forced to speak the German language, which they couldn't understand. They moved to Elgin, Illinois in 1892, where my grandfather worked in Borden's Condensed Milk factory" - - -
