Regimental History
44th, 45th, 46th and 47th Regiments and the 48th Battalion
IOWA (100 days)

The Hundred Days Men (The 44th, 45th, 46th and 47th Regiments and the 48th Battalion of Iowa Infantry)

Cols., 44th, Stephen H. Henderson; 45th, Alvah H. Bereman; 46th David B. Henderson; 47th, James P. Sanford; Lieut.-Cols., 44th Henry Egbert; 45th, Samuel A. Moore; 46th, Lorenzo D. Durbin; 47th, John Williams, 48th Oliver H. P. Scott, Majs., 44th, Josiah Hopkins, 45th James B. Hope; 46th, George L. Torbert; 47th, George J. North.

These regiments were mustered into the service mostly in June 1864, and performed willing and loyal duty. The 44th, 45th and 46th were held in Tennessee, garrisoning posts and guarding railways. The 47th was sent to Helena, Ark., where it suffered much from the malaria of that unhealthful locality. The 48th battalion guarded prisoners at Rock island, in the Mississippi river.

Col. Henderson of the 46th reported an engagement between some of his men and the enemy at Collierville, Tenn., about the middle of August. Capt. Wolf and 16 men were sent to rescue, if possible, 2 men of the 6th IL. cavalry, captured by the enemy, and in the attempt Wolf and 3 of his men were wounded - the captain and 1 man severely.

At the end of the time for which they had enlisted, these four regiments and the battalion were honorably mustered out, having faithfully and with credit accomplished their mission.

The loss of the 44th was 1 death from battle, and 15 from disease; of the 45th, 3 from battle, 18 from disease, and 1 wounded; of the 46th, 3 from battle, 23 from disease, and 21 wounded; of the 47th, 1 death from battle, and 46 from disease, and of the 48th, 4 deaths from disease.

Portraits & Biographical Album of Linn Co., IA, p. 311-312: "Robert J. Wilson. This well-known and representative farmer is a resident on section 32, Otter Creek Twp, and was one among the early pioneers of the Hawkeye State, coming here in 1851. He was born in Tuscarawas Co, OH, Dec. 7, 1845, and is the son of John and Margaret (Carson) Wilson. The father was a native of PA, where he was born March 25, 1798. The parents of John Wilson were John and Mary (Burgess) Wilson, natives of the Emerald Isle, but of Scotch descent. They were born in Country Farmanagh, Ireland, and emigrated to America shortly after the Revolutionary War, settling in Lancaster CO, PA, where they resided for several years. Thence they removed to OH, where the father died in 1840. The death of the mother occurred in 1855, under most distressing circumstances; her clothing became ignited from an old-fashioned fire-place, and she received injuries which resulted in her death in a short time. She died at the advanced age of 99 years, This estimable old couple were the parents of 8 children, 5 girls and 3 boys - Robert, Nancy, Betsy, Mary, Susanna, Jane, James & John B.
John W., the father of our subject, was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Carson. She was a 'child of the Ocean', having been born on the Atlantic while her parents were coming to America in 1805. Her death occurred in OH in 1848. Mr & Mrs. W. were the parents of 6 children - William, Samuel, Andrew J., Sarah J., Mary & Robert J. The latter, the subject of this notice, took to himself a life companion in the person of Miss Louisa J. Howe, April 17, 1870. Mrs. Wilson was born June 16, 1849 in Linn Co, IA She died April 24, 1882. Mr. Wilson was again united in marriage Dec 17, 1883, this time with Miss Annie L. Wickham, also a native of Linn Co. She was born Nov. 9, 1859, and is the daughter of Simeon J. & Hannah (Conner) Wickham, both natives of OH. Her father was born in 1820 and is still living; her mother was born Oct 15, 1830. They are the parents of 6 children - Jasper, Abigail, Annie L., Mary E, Uriah H., and one who died in infancy. Robert J. Wilson, the subject of this notice, is the father of one daughter Leo Louisa, born Jan. 2, 1885.
At the commencement of the late Civil War, Mr. Wilson, although quite young, was anxious to become a soldier for his country, but was disappointed in his hopes, being rejected on account of his youth and also not being in robust health. He would not be discouraged, however, and 2 years later again presented himself for enlistment, this time succeeding and being accepted as a member of Co. E, 46th IA Vol Inf., under the 100-day call, during which he served with credit, being discharged with his regiment Sept 23 of the same year. He participated in several engagements under Col. D. B. Henderson, and part of the time they were stationed as guards for the railway track.
Mr, Wilson is the possessor of 80 acres of fine farming land, In 1884 he erected a shapely & comfortable dwelling-house, which is considered one of the finest in the township. Politically, he is a Republican: socially a member of the Garfield Post and Denison Post # 244 in Center Point. Religiously Mr. Wilson is a member of the Christian Church at La Fayette, this township, having been connected with this church for the space of 11 years. Mr. Wilson is a member of the Methodist Protestant Church.
The first wife of Mr. Wilson was the daughter of Nelson and Margaret (Hemphill) Howe, both natives of OH. Mr. Howe died in that state in Sept. 1868; the mother is still living. They were the parents of 9 children - Louisa J., James, Matilda, Mela and Arminta (twins), Morris, John, William & Elizabeth.
Robert J. Wilson is a man well known & highly esteemed throughout his township and county for the many sterling qualities which shine as an example to the rising generation. In all his dealings he has been honest, upright, industrious, frugal and temperate, and enjoys the esteem and respect which are so justly his due, and it is to such men as the subject of this sketch that the Hawkeye State is indebted for her high position."
