1880 NE CENSUS, Burt Co, Silver Creek: Rachel "Mathena", 11, b. OH, parents b. OH. She was living with her sister and brother-in-law, Lewis T. & Julia A. Kiger.

INFO FROM KATHY TATE @ GENFORUM: "Rachel Matheny married a man with the surname Hower and they had three children that I know of. They were: Julia Anne, Jeffrey, and Elvin Hower. I was told that Julia Anne Hower was raised in the home of my gg grandparents, Lewis Thomas and Julia Anne Matheny Kiger, as my great grandmother's sister even though she was actually her first cousin. They also apparently partially raised Julia's two brothers, Jeffrey and Elvin. The story that I was told about Julia Anne Hower is that Julia Anne Matheny Kiger (Rachel Jamima Matheny's sister) sent her grandfather, Cyrus Matheny, to Nebraska at age 80 years old to bring back her sister's orphaned 7 month old daughter, Julia Anne Hower. Cyrus Matheny brought her back by train alone, changing diapers, etc. much to the admiration of the women passengers."

Rachel married Will HOWER. (Will HOWER was born in NE.)
