OBIT: Mills County Tribune, Monday, September 29, 1924 - Mrs. Thomas Shamblen - Neighbors as well as members of her family mourn the passing of Mrs. Thomas Shamblen, one of the beloved pioneer women of both Mills and Fremont counties.
For above 47 years Mr. and Mrs. Shamblen have lived in Mills and Fremont counties. They were hard working and true neighbors wherever was their home. Mrs. Shamblen while physically able delighted to serve her friends, family and neighbors. In early life she united with the Church of Christ and retained her membership throughout her life. Hers was a life of unselfish devotion to her family.
Ann E. Merrill was born near St. Louis, Mo., May 25, 1860, and died at the family home three miles south of Tabor, September 20, 1924, aged 64 years and four months. She was married January 25, 1877, at Fountain Grove, Ill., to Thomas Shamblen and with him has lived for forty-seven years in Mills and Fremont counties.
To them were born eight sons and five daughters; two daughters, Mrs. Pearl Hummel and Mrs. May Riffle, having preceded the mother to the better world. Besides the children and the aged husband there are left to mourn, two sisters, two brothers and thirty-one grandchildren. The sons are Roy W., George A., and John F., all of California, Charles D. of North Dakota, Earl L. of Imogene, Merrill L. of Lincoln, Harry W. and Lester L. of Tabor. The daughters are Mrs. Velma Funder of California, Mrs. Nellie J. Peterson of Strahan and Mrs. Annie E. Gaylord of Tabor.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the Tabor Church of Christ, conducted by Rev. G. R. Coleson. Burial was in the Malvern cemetery. Pall bearers were Mrs. Shamblen's sons, Fred, Roy, Earl, Merrill, Harry and Lester. Flower bearers were Miss Alpha Gaylord and Mrs. Harold Peterson. Music was furnished by a quartet consisting of Mrs. G. R. Colson and Misses Lucy and Edna Cannon and Julia Grosse.
