Daniel and at least part of his family had trekked to OK with the Leach family to participate in the land lottery of 1901. He returned home only to die.

OBIT, Mapleton Press, July 11, 1907: At the home of his sister, Mrs. Dianna (Ball-Leach) Smith, in St. Clair Twp, last Sunday morning at one o'clock, Daniel Ball was claimed by the grim reaper, Death. Mr. Ball was one of the pioneers of Monona Co, but of late years had resided in Dewey Co, OK. He leaves a wife and a large family of grown children, besides an aged father and several brothers and sisters to mourn his loss. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon by Rev. O. S. Bryan, and the remains interred in Heisler Cemetery. Submitted by Roger A. Greenough
