NEWSPAPER ARTICLE, Statesman Journal, Nov. 25, 1988: Accident leave 3 dead: A Japanese student, a Monmouth woman and a Wadsworth, Nev., infant were killed in two separate accidents Wed. as blustery winter conditions statewide made travel precarious.
Michie Shigeta, 24, a Western Oregon State College student, was killed when a car driven by Yukiko Sugawara, 21, collided with a car driven by Walter Gates about one mile southeast of Dallas.
Sugawara, also an exchange student, was in serious condition Thursday night at Emanuel Hospital & Health Center. Gates' wife Hazel Jean, 58, was killed, and he was in fair condition at Valley Community Hospital in Dallas.
"It's a little on the strange side," Polk County sheriff's deputy Larry Gilmore said of the 3 p.m. accident. Sugawara, who has only a learner's permit, was on a rainy, milelong straight stretch of Clow Corner Road when witnesses said the car started weaving, finally crossing the center line and being struck broadside, Gilmore said. Shigeta, the only passenger, did not have a valid license, he said.
The accident does not appear to be alcohol-related and both cars were traveling about 50 mph, he said. The accident remains under investigation, he said, and will include a mechanical inspection of the Sugawara vehicle.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE, Itemizer-Observer, Nov. 30, 1988: Two people died in a Thanksgiving Eve traffic accident near Dallas.
The deaths of a Monmouth woman and a Japanese student from Western Oregon State College brought to 13 the number of people who have died on Polk County roads in 1988. Four of the deaths were in November.
Michi Shigeta, 24, and Hazel Gates, 58, were killed in a crash on Clow Corner Road near Ballard Road, tow miles west of Dallas. Gates' husband, Walter, was driving one car. Yukiko Sugawara, also a WOSC student, was the other driver. Both drivers survived the crash, which occured at 3 p.m.
Polk County Sheriff Ray Steele said the accident occured when a car driven by Sugawara, 21, also of Japan, swerved into the opposite lane, travelling east bound.
Walter Gates, 51, was coming west bound toward Dallas and he attempted to swerve to miss Sugawara's car. Steele said witnesses reported that Sugawara's car "fishtailed" into Gates lanes. He said Gates drove toward the ditch attempting to avoid the collision, but Sugawara's car broadsided Gates' car.
"We have no idea, (why Sugawara lost control)," Steele said. "I don't know if we'll ever know. He said that the pavement was wet, and that he did not believe alcohol was involved.
Shigeta's body was sent to Tokyo, and Sugawara's parents will come to Portland to take their daughter home, Steele said. Sugawara was taken first to Valley Community Hospital and transported to Emanuel Hospital in Portland. She is listed in stable condition.
Walter Gates was discharge from Valley Community on Nov. 26.
