OBIT: Morning Journal, Lisbon, OH: CALCUTTA - George W. "Bud" Godwin, Jr., 86, of Calcutta died at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 15, 2008, at his residence following a lengthy illness. Born in New Cumberland, W. Va., on Nov. 11, 1921, he was the son of the late George W. Godwin, Sr. and Sarah Godwin.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific, and had retired from the former Crucible Steel Company after 36 years of service. A member of the American Legion Post #121 in Chester, he was also an avid NASCAR fan.
Surviving are two daughters, Lorrie Gagliardo and her husband, Bruce, of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Shelby Glover and her husband, Mike, of Chester, W. Va., along with two sons. Jerry W. Godwin and his wife, Mickie, of Summerville, S. C., and William C. Godwin and his wife, Debbie, of Las Vegas, Nev. His companion, Hilda Rogers, also survives. There are six granddaughters, Stacey, Mellissa, Julie, Cindy, Penny and Diane, as well as nine great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his wife, Jewell Wickham Godwin, who died in 1978, and an infant daughter, Debbie Godwin, who died in 1967. There were also seven sisters who preceded him in death, Mary Ferguson, Virginia Clark, Blanche Blakeslee, Betty Bowersock, Ruth Thompson, Doris Godwin and Pearl Godwin.
Friends may call Wednesday evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. Private family services will be held at a later time. Burial will be at Union Cemetery, New Manchester, where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will conduct full military honors.
