Heritage of Fayette Co, IA, 1996: Earl and Bernice (Sniffin) Woodson: Earl was born 1913 near Hawkeye. His mother was Viola (Smock) Woodson, his father was Reuben Woodson. They lived in Fayette County and had four children: Earl, Virgie, Alfred and Eva.
Earl graduated from West Union High School in 1935. He worked for Fayette County Highway Department. In November 1942 he married Bernice Sniffin, born 1917 at Bristow, Iowa. Her family moved to Wadena, Iowa when she was five years old. Her father was a barber. Bernice graduated from high school in 1934 and attended Upper Iowa University for two years. She taught rural schools in Fayette County and fifth and grades in Fairbank and Clinton. She married Earl November 28, 1942 in Wadena. Earl served in the Air Force in US, England and Germany form 1942-1944.
Earl and Bernice farmed fifteen years near Hawkeye and West Union. They had five children: Robert, Barbara, Richard, Patricia and Kathleen. Earl and Bernice bought an acreage near Hawkeye in 1962. Bernice continued her college education and graduated from UIU in 1960. She taught in St. Lucas, Turkey Valley and Hawkeye, twenty seven years in all.
Earl died June 2, 1969, age 56 years, of a heart attack Bernice's parents were Charles Sniffin, born near Bristow, Iowa in 1888 and Alice (Flanagan) Sniffin born near Wadena in 1888. They had five children: Bernice, Thomas, Paul, Mary and Peggy. They lived most of their married life in Wadena.
After Bernice retired from teaching she moved into Hawkeye in 1973. In 1978 she traveled in Europe for five weeks touring Rome, Paris and Amsterdam. She keeps busy now with fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She does church work (Catholic) and is a member of the Hawkeye Garden Club, Retired Teachers and Fayette County Tourism Council. She also volunteers in the library and at the meal site.
