OBIT: SUSANNAH ALLEN - Susannah Allen was a native of the state of New York, born Nov. 23rd, 1791. Her maiden name was Farrington. She united in marriage with Amasa Allen, Aug. 16th, 1906. To them were born 12 children, 7 of whom have passed from earth, and five, with the father, are left to mourn. Against the perils, difficulties and disadvantages of those early times, they struggled heroically, and were successful. They came from New York to Illinois in 1855, and settled near Terre Haute, where they have since resided. Have had their home with their son Joseph Allen for the past nine years.
Mother Allen was converted to God in 1807, and joined the Missionary Baptist church, in whose fellowship she lived, labored and loved for 49 years, and until they came west, when she united with the Free Will Baptist church, in whose communion she lived until the master said it is enough, come up higher.
Mother Allen was a devoted wife, a faithful mother, a consistent Christian, an obliging neighbor and a true friend. She sympathized with the sorrowing, felt for the suffering, and was ever ready with willing hands to administer to the needy. She was compelled, (by reason of her advanced age,) to retire from all care and labor about eight years ago. Was confined to her room almost two years, and for the last nine weeks of her life, was perfectly helpless. She had no disease, and consequently did not manifest much suffering. On Tuesday evening March 11th, 1884 at 7 o'clock she quietly passed away, aged 92 years, 3 months and 18 days. Her funeral was conducted at the Free Will Baptist church in the presence of a large and sympathizing audience of friends and neighbors. (Obituary submitted by Marilyn Austin Hothem.)
