bullet  General Notes:

INFORMATION FROM PERLE STINE: (suspicion- strong- unproven) "Ben Kamberling (Sr.) had come to Cedar Co. to look for land for a home. Was carrying gold. Went to stay at a stage stop for night before returning for family. Several men travelers died suddenly after eating there. Poison or other means were used. Another version says they were hit over the head from behind a curtain, bodies disposed of in old well. Victims chosen if thought to have money or valuable possessions. Audis Bennett said 'Osborn', the murder lived on old Slater farm, (about 1 mile east of Sutliff). The old well was cleaned and many bones were found and presumed to be human bones. I also heard from someone that he was killed at Muscatine for his gold." (Note: Benjamin had died before 1850 Census and appeared to have died about 1845, according to the obit below.)
