FAMILY HISTORY FROM PATRICIA CONKLIN ZUPAN: Patricia's grandfather, Roy, told her that he was orphaned at about age 12. Roy, along with his brothers and sisters, was placed in an orphanage at York, York Co, NE at the age of about 12. He said he ran away from the orphanage and worked as a farmhand and a cowboy at different cattle ranches in western NE and made it on his own.

MOTHER'S JEWELS ORPHANAGE, York Co, NE: listed as David LeRoy Tammen in records (but probably David Roy Conklin) According to the orphanage records he was taken by a Mrs. Margaret Tappert of Oshkosh, (Garden Co.), Neb. on June 20, 1900. He had arrived at the orphanage on April 6, 1900.

OBIT: Council Bluffs Nonpareil (IA), Aug 27, 1958: Avoca - Roy David Conklin, 69, of Avoca, died Monday in a Harlan hospital. He had been in ill health but a short time with a heart condition. Conklin, who was born in Kansas, had lived in Avoca since 1924. He was a retired railroad employee. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Berthusen Funeral Home in Avoca. The Rev. Robert Yoak of Mitchellville will officiate and burial will be in the Avoca Cemetery. Survivors are: widow, Edna; two daughters, Mrs. Wilson Derby of Stockton, CA, and Mrs. Marion Christensen of Marshalltown; one son, Frank, of Omaha; one brother W. O. White of Grand Island, NE; and 12 grandchildren.

OBIT: Harlan Tribune (IA), Aug. 29, 1958: Roy Conklin, 69, Avoca, died Aug. 25 at the Harlan, IA hospital.
