October 19, 1931 - December 24, 2015 Wilbur Garrels, 84, passed away on December 24, 2015. He was born in Mt Pleasant, IA and graduated from high school there in 1949. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served for four years. He then worked as a farmer and was very involved with the National Farmers Organization. Wilbur also designed electrical and mechanical components for his own business and other companies. His work in this industry took him to Texas, then to Winston-Salem. Wilbur really loved to talk with people, enjoyed volunteering at his church, and was an avid reader. Wilbur is survived by Lela Hadrava, the mother of his children; his daughters, Laura Smith, JoAnn Williams, and Barbara Helenschmidt; his stepsons, James, David, and Steve Morrissey; seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his second wife, Helen; his stepson, Scott Morrissey; and his grandson, Nicholas Smith. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 20 at 2 pm at Unity Church, 108 Hewes Street, Winston-Salem, NC.
