Soldier in the French and Indian War
and the Revolutionary War

John Wickham was born in Rhode Island in June of 1734 to unknown parents. When 8 years old he moved to New York and from this state he later served in the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. Around 1818 he, and many of his descendants, moved to Ohio. At the age of 99 years, he applied for a military pension and was awarded $80 a year. When almost 100 years old, John married his second wife, Sarah Cunningham, who was in her 80's. At the time of this marriage, his appearance was like a man of sixty. He died Feb. 19, 1835 in Morgan Co, Ohio at the age of 100 years and 8 months.

I have been researching John Wickham, his many descendants and possible ancestors for the past 16 years. In the course of this journey, I acquired a massive amount of information on Wickhams in the United States, which motivated me to develop this web-site in Nov. 2007 so the information could be shared with others. The intent of this site to provide information about 7 generations of Wickhams, with John Wickham being the oldest ancestor. Currently, on this site there are almost 8,100 individuals and 190 photos.

Information on 5 of John Wickham's sons is already included on this site:

Sir William J. Wickham
, perhaps named after Sir William Johnson of the French and Indian War, served as a drummer in the War of 1812. He was listed as a son in John Wickham, Sr.'s pension papers. William moved from New York to southeast Ohio.

John Wickham, Jr., youngest son, moved from New York, to southeast Ohio and then to Iowa with his extended family. John Wickham, Sr. appears to be living with him in the 1830 OH census. John, Jr. was married twice, reportedly had 21 children, and 7 of his sons served in the Civil War. Information on John Jr.'s line was added Feb. 2008.

Benjamin Wickham, identified as oldest son in John Wickham's pension application, had a very large family with many descendants. Benjamin moved from New York to southeast Ohio with his family. Benjamin's information was added Dec. 2008.

Reuben Wickham lived in New York his entire life but many of his descendants moved westward with the other Wickhams. Information on Reuben's line was added July 2009.

Warren Wickham may have served in the Revolutionary War and moved from New York to southeast Ohio with his brothers. Warren's information was added January 2010.

Daniel Wickham, assumed to be John's oldest son, served in the Revolutionary War and lived in NY his entire life. THIS LINE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION !

There is also some information on John Wickham's daughers and more will be added as time permits. So, check back often if you do not see your ancestor currently listed!

WANTED: Photos and other information to add to this site. I am most grateful to the many people who have already shared their photos! Effort has been made to exclude living individuals from this site and to include source information whenever possible. However, mistakes and typos can happen, so please inform me of any errors.

RESEARCH: I invite you to join me on the journey to discover the parentage of John Wickham. Does he connect to Thomas Wickham 1623-1688 who came from England to CT in 1648? Thomas Wickham is considered the forefather of many of the Wickhams in the US. There has been much speculation about John Wickham's parentage on the Internet but none have shown a connection to RI where John stated he was born. My theory is that John is a descendant of Immigrant Thomas Wickham's son Samuel, who moved from CT to RI, most likely through Samuel's son Capt. William Wickham, b. 1705. Of course, I have no proof - yet!

DNA RESEARCH: We are looking for male descendants of John Wickham with the surname of Wickham/Wickam/Wickem who are willing to do DNA testing, through Ancestry.com., to help trace ancetry beyond John Wickham, Sr. Some DNA testing of this line has already been done that indicate a stong connection to descendants of Immigrant Thomas Wickham. If interested, please contact me for details.

Much appreciation goes to the late Gerald D. Wickham of Iowa Falls, IA and the late Anne Wickham of Ohio, without whom this web-site would not exist. They researched Wickhams diligently for many years, and much of their reseach is included in this site. They also offered much support and encouragement to me and other Wickham researchers.

Thanks also goes to the late Arthur Wickham who did extensive research in the 1940's in an attempt to complie a genealogy of all the Wickhams in the USA. As part of his research, he wrote letters to Wickhams throughout the US, requesting informaion about their relatives. Some of the letters he received are transcribed at this site. After Arthur's death, his research records were donated to the Nebraska State Historical Library at Lincoln: manuscript collection MS3564 John F. Wickham.
