Dodge Center -- The funeral for Alonzo F. "Buck" Brown will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Czaplewski Family Funeral Home in Dodge Center, with the Rev. Michelle Miller officiating. Interment will be in Wildwood Cemetery in Wasioja, with Wells-Peterson American Legion Post 384 of Dodge Center providing military honors.
Mr. Brown, 87, died Saturday (July 26, 2008) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester. Alonzo Floyd Brown was born Aug. 31, 1920, in Racine. He attended school in Iowa, at Waubeck and Bowlish, and graduated from Viola School. He then worked on various farms until joining the service on Nov. 4, 1941. During World War II, he served as a staff sergeant in the Air Force in Rhineland, Normandy, Northern France and Ardennes, with the Central Europe Campaign. He received five Bronze Stars, a Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster, and good conduct medals and was honorably discharged on Sept. 10, 1945.
Following his service, Mr. Brown worked as a cement finisher for Fisher Construction for 15 years and as a machine operator at the Owatonna Canning Factory for 22 years. He retired in 1986. He was a longtime member of VFW Post 3723, Owatonna Eagles Aerie 1791, and Dodge Center American Legion Post 384. He enjoyed gardening, flowers and family reunion
On Aug. 26, 1947, he married Edna Mae Wickham in Iowa; she preceded him in death in May 1986.
He is survived by three sisters, Bernice Maiden of Anamosa, Iowa, Bertha Moore of Eureka, Calif., and Ramona Schaefer of Greene, Iowa; and special friend Florence Kulla of Dodge Center. Other survivors include his great niece and goddaughter, Becky Raines of Dodge Center. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Czaplewski Family Funeral Home, and an hour before the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
