OBIT: The Hawk Eye (Burlington, IA), Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008: Charles Herbert Butler, 70, of Kahoka, Mo., died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at his home. Born July 28, 1938, in Clark County, Mo., he was the son of Barton Orin "Dutch" and Mabel Fern Wickelman Butler. On Dec. 18, 2007, he married Evelyn M. Ladwig in Kahoka.
Mr. Butler had operated the Kahoka Roller Rink and Butler Super Valu. He was an area lineman for Lewis County R.E.C., retiring in 2001. He also had served as mayor of the City of Kahoka since 2003. He graduated from Kahoka High School and was a member of the Kahoka United Methodist Church and former Mason and Shriner.He also was a member of the Northeast Missouri Regional Planning Commission. He enjoyed all sports and coached girls and boys softball and baseball for more than 15 years. He was proud to have organized the first American Legion baseball program in Kahoka. He officiated basketball games for more than 25 years and announced all Clark County R-1 sports and supported the efforts in the community, church and schools. He held the highest license in harness racing and was a driver and trainer for 30 years. He raced in Missouri, Illinois, Iowa and Kentucky and announced harness races at pari-mutual in Kentucky, was a presiding judge in Chicago (Balmoral Park) and state fairs in Springfield, and Missouri and Iowa state fairs. He was a presiding judge at Prairie Meadow Race Track in Altoona for eight years, and in May of 2008, was appointed to the Missouri Horse Racing Commission by Gov. Matt Blunt. He also was a member of the Iowa Harness Horse Association and enjoyed contributing to the community through his volunteer efforts and the many people he met along the way.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Mark C. Butler of Palmyra, Mo.; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter and one brother.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka, with family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Butler will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka, with the Rev. Barb Hagerla officiating. Burial will follow in Kahoka Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the Clark County R-1 Sports Boosters and Kahoka Cemetery Trust Fund.
