The Vinton Review - Thursday, July 19, 1917, p. 1:
Children Taken to Orphanage -
The three children of Mr. and Mrs. W. O. White, Mildred, aged eleven; Viola, aged three, and Raymond, aged two years old, were taken to the orphans' home at Davenport Sunday, and the mother, Nora Ake White, with her three months' old baby, has been taken to the home for the feeble minded at Glenwood. The baby will stay with the mother until weaned and will then be taken to the orphans's home.
This disposition of the members of this family is made upon the order of Judge B. F. Cunmmings, the recommendation having been made by County Attorney Geo. E. Knapp, after he had made a thorough investigation of the conditions in the home. The father, W. O. White, makes a meager living carrying and shoveling coal and doing odd jobs. The mother has been mentally deficient all her life and is not competent to care for the children, as the father could not care for them nor provide a caretaker, the conditions in the home had reached a sad stage. Upon complaint of a neighbor the country attorney started an investigation with the above results.
