Lillie Mae suffered from mental problems. It is unknown whether it was a result of having lost her first son at an early age or from her husband being murdered. She spent a great deal of time in the Clarinda, IA mental hospital and at least once in Des Moines. A woman who keeps the records in Clarinda shared that Lillie was married at 16, had a sibling with TB, sister with epilepsy,a total of 9 brothers and sisters and she had quit school at 14 to help her mother. She was admitted to the mental hospital in 1927,1929,1937.
