Stella James, 85, of friendship Manor, Grinnell, died Oct. 15, at Grinnell General Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Steffy Funeral Home in Montezuma, with burial at Jackson Township Cemetery.
The Rev. Hugh Shiveley officiated, and music was provided by Arthur Goeke, soloist, and Alice Underwood, organist. Pallbearers were Leroy Kellogg, Robert McLain, Dennis Johnston, Daryl Holcomb, Dick Breuklander, Laurel Keller, John Johnston, William McLain, Raymond Williams and Lauren James.
The daughter of Rachel and Michael Fayer, she was born March 10, 1890, in Union Township,. She attended Sunnyside rural school.
On Feb. 21, 1912, she was married to B. H. James. The couple had 5 children. Mr. and Mrs. James made their home on the same farm in Union Township for 57 yrs.
After breaking her hip, she and her husband moved to an apartment in Grinnell. For the past 2 years they lived at Friendship Manor.
Mrs. James was a member of the Little Mound Baptist Church until she transferred her membership to the First Baptist Church in Grinnell.
She is survived by her husband; her children, Florence M. Wiley of Grinnell, Louise McLain of Montezuma, and the Rev. Warren James of Montezuma, Erma Holcomb of Fort Collins, Colo., and Arlene Johnston of Victor; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Bertha Allen of Deep River.
