FAMILY LORE: After their marriage, they lived at Dow City, Crawford Co, IA before moving to Mapleton, IA about 1874. Cornealius was a well digger by trade but he spent much of his time playing cards in the local saloon. By necessity, Flora had to work for her father-in-law, Robison Kearnes, one of Mapleton's earliest hotel owner.

OBIT, Mapleton Press, March 3, 1900: "Flora Clementine Ball, wife of Cornelius Kearns, was born in Linn Co., IA, in 1851, and died at her home in this city, Wednesday, February 28, 1900, of pneumonia, aged 49 years. In 1870 the deceased moved to Shelby County, this state, where she was married, and with her husband located at this place in 1874, where they have since resided. She leaves a husband and four children to mourn her departure. Funeral services were conducted today from the Episcopal Church, of which the deceased was a member, by Rev. R.C. Talbot, and the remains interred in Heisler Cemetery." Submitted by Roger Greenough.
