These regiments were mustered into the service mostly in June 1864, and performed willing and loyal duty. The 44th, 45th and 46th were held in Tennessee, garrisoning posts and guarding railways. The 47th was sent to Helena, Ark., where it suffered much from the malaria of that unhealthful locality. The 48th battalion guarded prisoners at Rock island, in the Mississippi river.

Col. Henderson of the 46th reported an engagement between some of his men and the enemy at Collierville, Tenn., about the middle of August. Capt. Wolf and 16 men were sent to rescue, if possible, 2 men of the 6th IL. cavalry, captured by the enemy, and in the attempt Wolf and 3 of his men were wounded -- the captain and 1 man severely.

At the end of the time for which they had enlisted, these four regiments and the battalion were honorably mustered out, having faithfully and with credit accomplished their mission.

The loss of the 44th was 1 death from battle, and 15 from disease; of the 45th, 3 from battle, 18 from disease, and 1 wounded; of the 46th, 3 from battle, 23 from disease, and 21 wounded; of the 47th, 1 death from battle, and 46 from disease, and of the 48th, 4 deaths from disease.

1985 LETTER TO GERALD WICKHAM FROM ELIZABETH WICKHAM SKINNER, Colorado: All children of Jacob D. Wickham, except for possibly Mary, were b. Lyle, Decatur Co, KS.

EXCERPTS FROM A 1954 SPEECH GIVEN BY CLAUDE A. WICKHAM: History of the Lyle Methodist Church - Seventy-Fifth Anniversary 1877-1954:
In the spring of 1873 a little settlement began in the northeast part of Decatur County. Late that spring my parents came; they were the first married couple and brought with them a boy, Harlan, one year old. The next year, 1874, the baby became ill and died. The first sermon preached in the community was a funeral sermon for this baby in my parents' log cabin.
In 1876 a log church with built with an earthen floor and a fireplace. The 9 charter members included Mr. & Mrs. J. D. Wickham, and Elizabeth Sorick, Mrs. Wickham's sister. This church was soon outgrown and in 1882 a larger sod church was built in the town of Lyle. In 1906 a newer frame church was completed and dedicated.
In 1926 there were no crops, no feed, no grass and most of the livestock was sold or moved out. In the 1930's came the depression and seven years of crop failure. During these hard times, work was done on the church by farmers who had no work.

HISTORICAL REMINISANCE - excerpts of notes by Claude A. Wickham in 1954:
The Lyle community was discovered and claimed by four young men, including Mick and Tom Sorick, brothers of my mother. In the summer of 1872 they settled on adjoining homesteads. They persuaded my parents to take an adjoining claim in the spring of 1873 and with a few cooking utensils and a prairie schooner they arrived and built a log cabin.
Edgar Wickham was the first baby to be sprinkled in the Log Church.
Grasshoppers of 1873-74-75-76. In the fall of 1878, we read no Sunday School today, owing to the Indian raid. Following this was the drouth of 1880.
I would not advise those who are extremely poor to come to Kansas. No one should attempt to homestead with less than $1000.
In 1883 Mr. Wickham's broom factory is in readiness and will be spinning out brooms, as soon as the broom corn comes in. No more broom corn will have to be shipped to Chicago.
In 1884 J. D. Wickham and Worl Andrews purchase the store, which had been build on Father's homestead. From the opening of the new firm of Wickham and Andrews (sometime in May) to Jan. 1, 1885, they took in 4800 lbs butter, 3197 dozen eggs, 2713 lbs. chicken, besides ducks, turkeys, rabbits and quail, just one branch of their business. In 188_ they dissolved partnership and Andrews built a store building on this corner where the church now stands.
Almost daily the last two weeks, good are arriving at J. E. Wickham's. He now has the largest and best selected stock ever brought to Lyle. Those embroidered dress patterns are lovely.
1885 - J. D. Wickham pays 17 cents for corn. The corn market at Lyle is a little in advance of any other market in the county. But little sale for cattle.
In 1889 J. D. Wickham moved from the log cabin down by the creek to his new frame dwelling addition built on the store building.
J. D. Wickham is running a chicken factory in connection with General Merchandise.
In 1898 a Junior League was organized with Laura E. Wickham as Superintendent.
